How to apply for the new Director Identification number (Director ID number)
Individuals need to apply for their own Director ID Number
Please note that only an individual can apply for a Director ID Number, you can not apply for them as it requires the use of the MyGovID app
Why is this happening?
To make company officer identification safer.
To make names registers more consistent between ASIC and other names registers.
Are there any changes to the process of incorporating a company
Up until 5 April 2022 there is no change to the set up process to incorporate a company
After 5 April 2022, each director will need to provide their Director ID number to incorporate a company
The key dates are as follows
- For companies incorporated prior to 1 November 2021, directors have until 1 November 2022 to apply for a Director ID Number
- For companies incorporated between 1 November 2021 and 5 April 2022, each director must apply for a Director ID Number (if they do not already have one) within 28 days of their appointment as a director
- If a person becomes a director of existing company after 1 November 2021 they need to apply for a Director ID Number (if they do not already have one) within 28 days of their appointment as a director
- After 5 April 2022 the Director ID number for each director will be required to incorporate a company
What happens once the Director ID number is issued
At this stage the director simply needs to provide their Director ID number to each company they are a director of.
The company needs to keep the Director ID number confidential.
It is likely that at some stage in the near future each company will need to advise ASIC of each Director ID Number but at this stage once the director has notified the company of their Director ID number they have complied with the current requirements
The application process is via www.ABRS.gov.au
Options are to do via paper, phone or lodge with mygovid.
Remember to keep your director identification number safe in your records and share to your tax agent.
